Show Some Kindness and Watch for Surprising Results!

Summer break is coming soon! It’s often thought to be a time of fun and relaxation away from the busy schedule of the school year. However, alongside the warm aspects of summertime, this season can also bring on boredom and self-absorption in kids and adults alike.

So, what’s the best way to adjust one’s mindset from grumpy to grateful? You got it—doing something kind for someone else!

Is kindness overrated? Never!

You may wonder how showing acts of kindness can turn a grim perspective into one that’s glad. Simply put—it draws our mindset away from selfishness and propels it toward serving others.

Whether you’re alone and single or married with kids, there are tons of doable acts of kindness in which to be involved over the summertime. Here are a few ideas to get you started thinking:

  • Take a batch of home-baked cookies to a friend “just because”
  • Mow the lawn or work in the garden for an elderly person or single mom in your neighborhood
  • Offer to babysit for a couple who may be on a restricted budget
  • Take a meal to a family with a new baby at home
  • Offer to dog- or house-sit for neighbors/friends while they’re out of town
  • Take a few opportunities to read to—or visit with—an elderly/homebound person
  • Surprise a friend or coworker by treating her to lunch or dinner
  • Start a “Summer Surpriser” activity (similar to Secret Santa) at your workplace or neighborhood group for weekly fun treats
  • Clean your child’s room while he’s away at camp (to surprise him when he returns home)
  • Take your boss or administrative assistant out for lunch or a well-deserved coffee break
  • Volunteer at a soup kitchen (for the homeless) or a clothing pantry

In Colossians 3:12 we’re reminded to “clothe [ourselves] with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” God’s desire is for us to live in harmony with one another. The best way to do this is by showing kindness to others—especially on days when things around you may be otherwise heating up!
