We normally think of a reflection as something glistening from the surface of glass or a mirror. But sometimes, with much embarrassment and shame, we see (and hear) our true hearts reflected through the comments of our children.
Kids pick up a lot of words and values from what they notice in our behavior and words to others. And during the holidays, this kind of replication is not always the easiest thing to observe. Big gulp. Guilty!
Seems like my children literally want everything they see! Whether it’s for their birthday or Christmas, their “want” list is a mile long! No matter what they get for special occasions— even when they are very thankful—they always want more.
And truth be known, so do I!
Enough is never quite enough, is it?
“If I could have just one more, please?!” More of what the neighbors have. More to cram into the [beyond-stuffed] drawers and closets. More than what we had last year. Just more!
Isn’t having more stuff better? Or, is it simply just more?
For some reason, we believe if we could just have more—then life would be easier or better. Along with a desire to have more is the feeling that there isn’t enough to go around. At Christmastime, we are not only faced with the idea that we want it all but if someone else has it and we don’t—the world may truly end, because after all “Supply is limited! Get it today while you can!”
Thankfully, when we take a step back and look at the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we see in Him everything we really need! Here are just a few examples:
- “Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens.” Psalms 68:19
- “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” Psalms 24:1
- “May the Lord cause you to flourish, both you and your children.” Psalms 115:14
- “You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.” Psalms 145:16
- “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10
The Lord has promised to provide for His children—things seen and unseen. As 2 Peter 1:3 states, “His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness.”
This promise is for believers. God is enough! He has enough grace for each of us every day. In Him, there is fullness of joy. His promises are the best gift we could ever be given. He is more than enough!
