Therapist Spotlight — Tara Sweeten

Tara is a Senior Psychological Examiner, Certified EMDR Therapist, and play therapist. She provides counseling and psychological/educational assessments for children, adolescents, adults, and families.

Tara’s special areas of interest include trauma, anxiety, depression, divorce, grief, abuse, behavior issues, attachment, social skills, and self-esteem.

Where did you go to school?
Undergraduate at Belmont University, Graduate at Middle Tennessee State University

What is a fond childhood memory?
Going to the lake to camp and water ski with my family

Where is a unique place you have lived?
I have lived in this area all my life

What is something you try to do each week?
Spend quality time with my husband and sons, connect with friends, and run

What is a favorite memory from growing up?
I have so many wonderful memories of times spent with friends and the amazing opportunities we experienced together in the various activities and sports I was blessed to be part of growing up

What is something about you that very few people know?
I absolutely LOVE to sing (unfortunately it is definitely NOT one of my talents)

What is a moment in counseling that stands out to you?
Anytime someone overcomes something they have tried so long to move past. It is truly a blessing to experience the joy they feel when healing occurs, and changes happen.

If you had one piece of advice for most anyone, what would that be?
Be patient and forgiving with yourself and others, live your life fully, love others deeply, and laugh daily

What truth from the Bible do you want everyone to know?
We are loved and never alone. We see this from Scripture: “God is our refuge and strength, a helper who is always found in times of trouble” (Psalm 46:1 CSB).

What is something practical you learned during your years of preparing to become a therapist?
To listen well, be flexible, and think creatively because everyone’s journey is unique
