Mid-week Motivation: How You Can Make the Best of Bad Situations

You might feel like this week has been one of those worst-case situations, shutting down your normal operating agenda. The winter storm that has swept over the whole USA this week certainly fits in this category of difficult-to-manage for many of us.

photo-1612292591935-bf095ea7d951But we’ve been having to live by Plan B for some time now. New rules of functioning aren’t always easy, but they are sometimes necessary.

Help for making it through the rough days:

Check your mindset
Believe me, I’m the first to walk down the road of doldrums when things go off the rails. Seeing the good in difficult circumstances takes determined intentionality, which I’m still working on. But I’m also learning the benefits of thinking in a more positive direction. We also see the outcome of doing this throughout Scripture.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” Romans 12:2.

“Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” Philippians 4:8.

Check on others
This is not only good to do for others’ safety, but it actually helps us as well. When we turn out thoughts from ourselves to the wellbeing of other people, it brings a happier mindset. Find out if your extended family members are ok. Check on elderly neighbors nearby. Reach out to friends you think might be in a difficult spot.

Check the forecast
This week, as we’ve been under a winter storm warning and have several inches of solid ice on the roads, I’m looking toward the weekend when warmer temps return to melt this all away! It gives me hope knowing this situation is not a forever kind of thing.

But even when our nastiest circumstances don’t involve the weather, it still helps for us to focus on what is ahead rather than remaining stuck in the misery of current dilemmas. I’m learning that joy is found in focusing on God to provide and care for us as we move forward in all matters of life.
